What You Appear to Be
Lauren Christine Gleason

According to Machiavelli (see the applicable quote to the left) a person can be seen as one of two things: "what you appear to be" and "what you are." My purpose, when you visit this webpage, is to show you both aspects of myself. Consider this webpage as a mental notebook for all of my thoughts and discoveries that do not require prose to explain. Current Passion: Grad School Applications
(changes regularly)

At this point I am moving the main webpage posts to lgleason.blogspot.com. I'm not sure if this move will be permanent. I am leaving the archives of this webpage on Tripod and they will be linked on my new page. This does not mean abandonment of this site yet. We'll see how it goes.

Thank goodness it's the weekend. Tripod has started putting pop-up ads with my webpage in addition to the ones already on there so I am exploring other server options. One possibility is Blogspot which has on-page ads, but that's no different from the way Tripod used to be. We'll see if I can come up with something better. Until then I have about three diary entries in the works. I am hoping that by the end of the weekend, homework permitting, there will be at least one posted.

Will grad school application hassles never end?

More pictures have been added to my PictureTrail photos page. I brought dozens of pictures from home to scan so this will be an ongoing project. Eventually the "Europe 1997" album will be larger than the others by far. Until then, enjoy the new additions.

Back in Gainesville once again. My long weekend in Tallahassee was just what I needed but now it's time to get back to school. Speaking of school, I am struggling with some homework at the moment so I'm going to go finish that.

All of the graduate school applications have been sent! You don't know what a relief this is to me. Now I need to make sure that all of the materials were received by the respective schools. This is a concern because I found out yesterday that one of my references hasn't written my letters of recommendation yet. More to come.

After a rather expensive visit to Pak Mail, my USC fellowship application is on its way to the admissions committee. The last thing I have to do for that particular school is mail my statement of purpose to the department seperately. It won't be long before grad school applications are a thing of the past for me.

My Stanford and Cal Tech graduate school applications have now both been submitted. Three down, two to go. Now I need to walk to Women's Chorale and it's raining. Fun.

The same pictures that were added to PictureTrail earlier are now available on my Yahoo! Photos page.

I just added some pictures to my PictureTrail photos page from the trip across the country my dad and I took last May. Also there are a few new pictures from my Lincoln High School years in a new album too.

When I was working at Boeing one way to fix a problem was to "throw money at it." This meant that any obstacle could be surmounted if there was enough money spend on it. That's sort of how I fixed my broken printer. More details to come.

I just renamed the newest (from early December) pictures at my Yahoo! Photos page. When I get settled into my semester routine I will scan and post some more.

Much to my surprise, I just submitted my graduate school application to USC. The strange thing is that I finished it so quickly. The confusing thing is that there was no place to include my statement of purpose. I'm going to have to call the graduate advisor to make sure I haven't messed up.

Happy birthday to me.

I posted a new diary entry last night. I couldn't announce that here then because the publishing capability of Blogger was unavailable. Now I can say, go read my diary!

My credit card sure got a workout today. No matter how much stuff I bring to a new residence there are always more things to buy. Now I need to buy textbooks for the semester. I hope my credit card makes it through all this!

I love high-speed internet! Even though there is still a lot of my stuff to unpack from my car I have already set up my computer and other electronic gadgets. Yes, I am a geek. Anyway, I am getting settled in my sorority house once again. It's strange being here again. Tomorrow I have to go shopping for textbooks and other school things. One day I will have some time to relax.

Well, for better or worse I just submitted my graduate school application to UCLA. I was up until the wee hours of the morning writing my statement of purpose. I never realized how difficult it would be to put my academic and career goals into words. Now I have to work on completing the other four applications. Not to mention moving to Gainesville tomorrow.

For the third time in my lifetime it has snowed in Tallahassee. I walked out of the dentist's office this afternoon into a small flurry of white flakes. The ground wasn't cold enough to allow accumulation but it was still a rare sight for our city. So those of you who though Florida was all tropical beaches were wrong!

Happy New Year! My first day of 2002 will be spent looking for a network card for my laptop, among other things. May the rest of the year be brighter than it appears today.
